This guide will tell you all you need to know to use the IRIS Connect Record app. If you have not yet installed the app you can do so by following the Record App download article here.
Contents of this article:
Software requirements
Apple devices: iOS 13 or newer
Android devices: Android 7 or newer
Android devices running 7 and above are supported, however, due to the vast number of manufacturers, models, and software versions, we haven't been able to test all combinations. Please get in contact with our support desk if you have any questions or problems
Space requirement: At least 3GB of space
This should be sufficient for a 1-hour recording, but each device will record at a slightly different resolution. On average, devices will record at 600MB-1GB per hour. You will need twice this space for the encryption process to be able to take place.
INFO: Technical Requirements
For device technical requirements see here.
Initial Install Process
Open the Record App
Once downloaded, the IRIS Connect Record app can be found on your device's Home Screen or in the app drawer.
Allow Permissions Prompts
When you open the app for the first time, you will be now prompted to allow the app access to Bluetooth, Camera, Microphone, and Notifications.
Make sure you tap "Allow" or "OK" on all as these are required for the app to function correctly.
Personal Mode
You will also be asked whether or not you would like to enable Personal Mode. Personal Mode will keep you logged into your account on the device. Since you'll likely be sharing the recording device across multiple recorders, select 'Off'.
Further information about Personal Mode can be found here.
System Check
On the next page, you will be asked to go through an initial System Check to ensure that all relevant settings have been enabled and the app can connect to the Internet.
Press the blue Test button at the bottom of the screen. (You might have to scroll down to see all the tests).
When the app has finished performing the checks, all fields will show a confirmation check mark as per the image below.
For a full guide to the system check, including how to resolve any failed checks, see this article.
Tap the Done button to go to the main dashboard.
Pairing Guides
See this article for the guide on Pairing a Bluetooth Microphone.
Recording
After the initial install process (described above) or whenever you open the app, you will be on the recording screen and the app will show you the camera feed. You should now take the time to position the device to best record your lesson.
Camera Settings
Prior to the recording, you can make a few adjustments to the video via the Settings icon in the top right-hand corner:
Camera: Choose whether to record using a front-facing or back-facing camera (the front camera is set by default).
Screen Fade: When on, screen fade will turn the screen to black when the recording starts. This feature is on by default to avoid distraction by the active recording. You can choose to switch the screen fade off before or during a recording.
Anonymization: This feature will obscure the recording view, please keep this feature OFF. Any recordings with the anonymization filter will fail the observation protocol requirements and will be rejected.
Camera Resolution: This is set to medium by default. We recommend either leaving it on the default setting or increasing the quality. Be aware that increasing the resolution will result in larger file sizes that maybe be difficult to upload on slower internet connections. Recordings on the low-quality setting risk being rejected if the video image is too poor.
Further information about camera quality can be found here.
Dual Audio: Enables the user using a bluetooth microphone to record two audio tracks, one from the mic and one from the device's internal mic. Recommend keeping this feature OFF for the OHS video project. Currently iOS only.
Mic Prompt: When on, you will receive an "are you sure" pop-up when you hit Start recording without the bluetooth microphone connected. Currently an iOS feature only, coming soon to Android.
Add User/Sign in
On the camera screen press Sign in.
On the next screen, if you haven't logged in yet, select Add User and enter your login details.
If no accounts have been added to the app yet, you will see the below screen without needing to tap Add User.
If you have already done this previously then simply select your account and enter your password.
Start Recording
Press the red Rec button to start recording.
If you have screen fade enabled the camera preview will fade to black.
The Record button will change to a Stop button and you will see a red recording indicator in the bottom right of the screen, along with a timer and file size counter.
Stop Recording & Save and Upload
When you have finished recording, press the Stop button on the screen.
The title will populate with a placeholder title initially. You can rename the video here or on the web platform later.
Press Save and Upload to upload your video to our web platform. You will then return to the record screen.
Tap the blue cloud icon on the bottom left of the screen to access the upload screen .
Make sure you are connected to WiFi or a mobile network (additional charges may occur). The device will wait until you are connected to upload your video. When uploading, a blue bar will show you the progress of your upload (see the image below).
If the upload bar is not progressing, tap on the upload to see if there is an error message and refer to the upload troubleshooting guide for next steps.
When successfully uploaded, the recording will show as dark grey and the file will be automatically deleted from your device.
The video will be stored on the device while being recorded. Once the recording has finished it will be uploaded to your account within the platform and be automatically deleted from the recording device.
